How Can We Help?
Educational use of student work
According to AR 3.2000.01, LAHC departments have the right to use student work for legitimate educational purposes: “For student-created Works, The College retains an unlimited license to use the work for educational purposes.” (“1 Scope of Policy”).
The use of student work for quality assurance activities lies well within the boundaries of “educational purposes.” Quality assurance activities include but are not limited to program review, jury grading, faculty peer review, etc.
Notice and Consent
Anonymized student work may be used for educational purposes without prior notice or consent.
In general, in cases in which student work is used with attribution for activities in which the work is not to be made available to the public, notice should be given, including an explanation of how the work is to be used. For instance, students should receive notice if their work is to be used for student peer-review activities or in-class modeling, along with a rationale for this use.
In cases in which student work is to be published in a way that is available to the public, for instance, in a literary journal, consent to publish should be obtained.
In all cases in which student work is used, care should be taken to safeguard the intellectual property and rights of students, within the framework of college policy and copyright law.
Research
According to :
For the purpose of this LAHC policy, research is distinguished from quality assurance data collection, analysis, and reporting. Research as defined above that incorporates student work, either anonymously or with attribution, must be approved through OIRA’s institutional research committee. See AR 1.0601.01.
